Flazasulfuron is a sulfonamide and a member of pyridines.

Flazasulfuron is part of the sulfonylurea group of herbicides. It can control annual and perennial weeds on surfaces not intended to bear vegetation.

As a weed killer, flazasulfuron is absorbed by the plants shoots and roots and then translocated throughout the plant, ultimately to the meristematic zone where it inhibits acetolactate synthase. This is a key enzyme for the plant and so results in plant death.

Flazasulfuron is a selective systemic herbicide for effectively controlling weeds on open land. It can be applied as a foliar spray or as a soil

treatment. It is absorbed through the roots or leaves of plants and translocated through the xylem and phloem to the meristematic growing points

of the plant. The mode of action of flazasulfuron is the inhibition of the enzyme acetolactase synthase (ALS), which results in the inhibition of

amino acid synthesis, cell division and ultimately plant growth. Flazasulfuron can be used on both pre-emergent weeds and post-emergent

weeds. Growth ceases within hours of the application of the compound. Symptoms include leaf discolouration, desiccation, necrosis and

ultimately plant death within 20 – 25 days of application. The selective nature of flazasulfuron is due to different plants ability to metabolise the

compound into inactive substances. Flazasulfuron has a broad spectrum of activity, attacking both annual and perennial weeds, specifically a

number of broad-leaved weeds, grasses and sedges. Flazasulfuron is used on open land such as hard surfaces (railway ballast only), natural

surfaces not intended to bear vegetation, permeable surfaces and overlying soil.

Branched chain amino acid synthesis (ALS or AHAS) inhibitor. Acts by inhibiting biosynthesis of the essential amino acids valine and isoleucine, hence stopping cell division and plant growth.

Mode of action
Systemic herbicide, rapidly absorbed through the leaves and translocated throughout the plant. Uses Pre- and post- emergence control of grass and broad-leaved weeds and sedges (especially Cyperus brevifolius and Cyperus rotundus) in warm-season turf (Zoysia and Cynodon spp.), at 25-100 g/ha. Also used in vines and sugar cane, at 35-75 g/ha. Phytotoxicity Transient discolouration of newly developing leaves and stunting may sometimes occur after treatment of turf, but recovery is rapid and complete
