Chlormequat
Chlormequat is an organic compound with the formula ClCH2CH2N(CH3)+
3 that is used as a plant growth regulator.
It is typically sold as the chloride salt, chlormequat chloride (C5H13Cl2N), a colorless hygroscopic crystalline substance
that is soluble in water and ethanol.
It is an alkylating agent and a quaternary ammonium salt.
Chlormequat has been called the "most important inhibitor of gibberellin biosynthesis."
As such, it inhibits cell elongation, resulting in thicker stalks, which are sturdier, facilitating harvesting of cereal crops.
hlormequat chloride is a plant growth regulator inhibiting the action of the gibberellic acid, resulting in shortening and strengthening
of stems in plants and reduced branching and foliage in certain species of shrubs and trees.
Treatment rates range from 0.2 to 3 l/ha.
Coincidentally the product increases the chlorophyll formation and the development of the root system, resulting in greater crop yield.
The main application is in the cereal cultivation where Chlormequat treatment reduces stem length, thickens and strengthens the plants to prevent
lay-down.

Application |
To increase resistance to lodging (by shortening and strengthening the stem) and to increase yields in wheat, rye, oats, and triticale; for wheat in Europe, applied at 0.8-1.6 kg/ha. Also used to promote lateral branching and flowering in azaleas, fuchsias, begonias, poinsettias, eraniums, pelargoniums, and other ornamental plants; to promote flower formation and improve fruit setting in pears, almonds, vines, olives, and tomatoes; to prevent premature fruit drop in pears, apricots, and plums; etc. Also used on cotton, vegetables, tobacco, sugar cane, mangoes, and other crops. |
