Tricyclazole
Tricyclazole is a triazolobenzothiazole that is [1,2,4]triazolo[3,4-b][1,3]benzothiazole which is substituted at position 5 by a methyl group.
A fungicide used for the control of rice blast, it is not approved for use within the European Union. It has a role as a melanin synthesis inhibitor
and an antifungal agrochemical. It is a conjugate base of a 5-methyl[1,2,4]triazolo[3,4-b][1,3]benzothiazol-1-ium.
Tricyclazole, also known as blas-T or blascide, belongs to the class of organic compounds known as triazolobenzothiazoles. These are compound
containing a triazole ring fused to the benzene or the thiazole moiety of the benzothiazole ring system. Tricyclazole exists as a solid, slightly
soluble (in water), and an extremely weak basic (essentially neutral) compound (based on its pKa). Within the cell, tricyclazole is primarily
located in the cytoplasm.
Tricyclazole (5-methyl-1,2,4-triazolo[3,4-b]benzothiazole) is a unique fungicide for control of Pyricularia oryzae on rice.
Tricyclazole is systemic in rice and will control rice blast disease in any stage of plant development by a variety of application methods.
Tricyclazole protects plants from infection by P. oryzae by preventing penetration of the epidermis by the fungus. The compound acts by
inhibiting melanization within the appressorium, thus causing a lack of rigidity in the appressorial wall.
Tricyclazole has no apparent effect on spore germination although sporulation is reduced.
Tricyclazole is not curative but is protective in its activity.
Active ingredient | Tricyclazole |
Chemical name | 5-methyl-1,2,4-triazolo[3,4-b]benzothiazole |
Classification | Fungicide / Agrochemical |
Formulation | 95% Tech, 75% WP |
CAS No. | 41814-78-2 |
Mode of action | Systemic fungicide, absorbed rapidly by the roots, with translocation through the plant. |
Usage |
Control of rice blast (Pyricularia oryzae) in transplanted and direct-seeded rice at 100 g/ha. Can be applied as a flat drench, transplant root soak, or foliar application. One or two applications by one or more of these methods give a season-long control of the disease. |
