Thifensulfuron-methyl is a post-emergence, sulfonylurea herbicide that moves inside the plant. It targets broad-leaf weeds in small-grain cereals by blocking the ALS enzyme, shutting down production of three key amino acids. Treated weeds stop growing almost immediately and show yellowing and die-back within a week or two.
Because it is so potent, only 10–30 grams of active ingredient are needed per hectare. The usual timing is a foliar spray when weeds have two to four true leaves. Farmers buy it as 75 % water-dispersible granules, 15–25 % wettable powders, or 97 % technical material for custom blending.
As of 2025, China has become the world’s largest production and export hub for thifensulfuron-methyl. The key facts are:
1. Capacity & output
• National name-plate capacity ≥ 2,000 t/year; real output 1,400–1,600 t, 70 % of global supply.
• Plants are clustered in Jiangsu, Hubei and Shandong; single lines now 300–500 t/year, thanks to continuous triazine-thiophene chemistry.
2. Major producers
• Yangnong Chemical (Youjia): first domestic scaler, ≥97 % TC + WDG/WP/SC, ships to North & South America, Eastern Europe.
• Changqing Agro-chemical (Nantong): 300 ton/year TC + 75 % WDG, full ICAMA set, main outlet South America.
• Hubei Bolan Chemical: 200 ton/year, thifensulfuron methyl 75 % WDG, widely used on domestic soybean, maize and wheat.
• Hubei BaoLing, Shandong & Hebei SMEs: offer 97–99 % TC or premixes, target SE Asia and Africa.
3. Registrations & trade
• 10 TC and 40+ formulation certificates (WDG, WP, SC, OD) covering wheat, maize, soybean, rice, sugar-cane.
• Exports 2024 ≈ 1,200 ton to USA, Brazil, Argentina, Russia, Pakistan, Australia.
4. Home market & price
• Domestic use 400–500 ton/year, 5 % CAGR driven by large-scale farming.
• In 2025 spot prices: 97 % TC USD54/ton, 75 % WDG USD78/ton, down ~5 % on softer triazine intermediate costs.
5. Outlook
• Stricter environment rules push continuous, automated processes and lower waste.
• Mixtures with florasulam, fluroxypyr, metsulfuron are the focus of new registrations to manage resistant weeds.
• Rising sourcing by FMC, UPL and Nufarm from China will further entrench the country’s global leadership.
