An acaricide used for mite control on various field, fruit, vegetable and ornamental crops

Propargite, recently introduced in India, is an effective acaricide on a large number of crops most

of which are consumed by human beings directly or after processing. Therefore,

it has become important to check the dissipation behavior of propargite in edible raw commodities,

processed products and in the environment. In the present study, dissipation of residue of this acaricide in soil,

apple fruit and tea (green tea leaves, manufactured tea, infusion and spent leaves) was studied.

Analysis was carried out using high performance-liquid chromatography with UV detection system.

The dissipation rate was found to vary with the nature of studied crop/sample. In soil, half-life ranged from 43 to 45 days,

while in plant matrices (tea and apple) it ranged 1.66–2.61 days.

The percent transfer of propargite residue from manufactured tea to infusion was 23.60–40.00;

however, 35.71–53.20% of the residues remained stuck to the spent leaves

Propargite (Omite 57E), 2-[4-(1,1-dimethylethyl) phenoxy]cyclohexyl 2-propynyl sulfite, is a non-systemic acaricide being used widely for

controlling phytophagous mites infesting a variety of crops namely cotton, vines, fruit trees, vegetables, hops, nuts, tea etc. (Royal Society of

Chemistry, 1987). This specific miticide, has generally little or no effect on beneficial insects including predaceous mites, when used at doses

recommended for the control of mite pests (Uniroyal, 1997) and, for the reason, it can be utilized in developing new strategies of integrated pest

Reviews FAO/WHO 86, 88 (see part 2 of the Bibliography). Oral Acute oral LD50 for rats 2800 mg/kg. Skin and eye Acute percutaneous LD50 for rabbits 4000 mg/kg. Severe eye and skin irritant to rabbits. Not a skin sensitiser to guinea pigs. Inhalation LC50 (4 h) for rats 0.05 mg/l. NOEL NOEL (1 y) for dogs 4 mg/kg b.w. daily; LOAEL (2 y) for SD rats 3 mg/kg b.w. daily, based on occurrence of jejunal tumours. Tumours not seen in Wistar rats or mice. NOAEL for SD rats (28 d) is 2 mg/kg b.w., indicating that cell proliferation is the cause of carcinogenicity and that there is a threshold dose; therefore, carcinogenicity is species and strain specific. ADI (JMPR) 0.01 mg/kg b.w. [1999]. Other Not genotoxic. Acute i.p. LC50 for male rats 260, female rats 172 mg/kg. Toxicity class WHO (a.i.)
